Port St. Joe Fishing Report

St Joe Fishing Report 05/18/2018

-St Joe Bay-
With the conditions this week, not much was happening. Those that did get out and fish, had success catching Reds, Trout and some Flounder. Most of the fish coming off the flats around the heavily baited grass beds. Pin fish are everywhere, LY's too. That's your best bait right now. Either free line a live pin or LY, or Carolina rig it with your preferred circle hook. I like the 2/0 VMC Sure Set Circle Hook. Flounder are definitely thick in and around those grass edges. Work a live bull minnow or soft plastics resembling small bait fish. Anglers have been successful with the ZMan MinnowZ with a 3/8 or 1/4 oz jig head. White, Electric Chicken, & Hot Chartreuse are the hot colors. Other anglers are using D.O.A. Shad Tail.
-Cape San Blas-
Pretty much the same report as last week's. Pompano and Whiting! Sand Fleas on a Pompano Rig tipped with fishbites will be the most productive for Pompano. For Whiting use a whiting rig with live shrimp or fresh dead shrimp peeled, tip with fishbites.
Shark fishing is picking up. Mostly 3-5 foot with some coming in at 6-8 foot. We have Bonita and Sting Rays in stock for shark bait. Get em before they're gone!

-Offshore-
The bait is back and so are the Kings. All it takes it getting out to the bouy line and finding that bait. Pull some Duster Rigs or live bait rigs with cigar minnows or a hard tail. Try bumping the boat in and out of gear if trolling isn't working. Make that bait jump and sink. Chuming while you run through bait will also help keep the bait around as well as the fish feeding on the bait.
Bottom fishing is still producing good numbers of Red Grouper, Vermilion, Trigger Fish, AJ's and Red Snapper (catch and release until June 11). Only a few more weeks of AJ's and Triggers, get out there and get em if you want em!

Looking ahead, Gag opens June 1. Red Snapper opens June 1 for CFH and June 11 for Recreational. Remember get out early to avoid those pop up thunderstorms later in the day. Be boat aware and stay safe out there!
